Crip Rave Theory

Large spotlights were focused onto a shallow mirrored pool that collected dripping water, reflecting the image onto the back of a semi-transparent textile hanging between the main space and the foyer. In front of the stage an array of mini-spot lights were angled onto two rotating cast and polished bronze reflectors, which projected warped patterns of light onto the front face of the textile. Tungsten fresnel and profile lights were focused upwards to the ceiling, highlighting the venue’s brutalist architecture, while also bouncing soft light back down into the space. Special attention was paid to pathways, ramps, stages and work areas, to provide sufficient practical light, while remaining in balance with the aesthetic light.
