Saturate

Saturate is Sara Retallick's original electroacoustic composition that can only be  experienced with ears below the water’s surface.

We needed to light the pool to meet safety standards while also signalling to the audience the beginning and end of the piece.

Four profile spots were hung on 3.6m winch up light stands and focused on the four corners of the pool, this light bounced of the surface of the water and the floor of the the pool,, additional underwater  lights were placed inside the pool to fill dark areas. In the adjacent areas battery powered lights were used for ambience and gels were used to colour the lights in the changing rooms.

The profile spots reflected of the surface of the water to project shifting patterns on the ceiling while also bouncing off the floor of the pool and spilling into the space which enabled the audience to safely enter and exit the pool. Colour and intensity shifts were used to signal the beginning and end of the piece and were used in contrast with the change rooms and ambient lighting.
